Walk the red carpet for the 2009 FSW Hollywood Nights Auction! Come dressed to impress as your favorite celebrity and watch for the fashion police. The "Best" and "Worst" dressed will receive a special award. The silent auction will start the evening with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Bid there and during dinner, at the live auction, for some great items like an outdoor play structure courtesy of Home Depot, or all-access passes to the Cucalorus Film Festival!

All proceeds go toward building our children's education for a brighter future. Please don't miss this social (and beneficial) event of the year!

What is the FSW auction?
The Friends School of Wilmington Auction offers an evening of enjoyment and community building while raising money that directly benefits all of our students. The auction is an organized effort undertaken by the PTO and the school’s administration. While the committee does much of the basic planning, the work of involved parents and community members is essential to making this substantial undertaking a success.

Why is the FSW auction important?
100 percent of the proceeds go towards enhancing our children’s education and building a better community. Last year’s auction raised $18,875 to support the school’s mission of educating children in the Quaker traditions. This year our fundraising goal is $40,000! The auction is a great community-building event where parents and other volunteers have fun working together to achieve a common goal.

When and where is this year's auction?
The 2009 FSW Auction will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 6 to 10 p.m. at St. James Parish, located at 25 South Third Street in downtown Wilmington. Parking is available along the streets surrounding St. James Parish.

What is the theme and dress?
This year's theme is Hollywood Nights. Come as your favorite celebrity (dead or alive) or dress for the red carpet! Prizes will be awarded (by the fashion police) to the best and worst dressed.

How do I attend the auction?
Invitations to the auction have been sent. Your reservation includes drinks, hors d'oeuvres, dinner, and dessert. Tickets may be purchased for $25 each at both campuses (check, cash or charge). Paper tickets will not be distributed.

How does the auction work?

When you arrive the night of the auction, stop by the check-in table to pick up your bid number and other important information.

Enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres as you bid on items in the silent auction. Be sure to take advantage of guaranteed bids to ensure you win the items you really want.

Once the silent auction closes, the dinner buffet will open and guests will be seated at their tables. The live auction begins and it is always full of excitement.

Stop by check-out at the conclusion of the evening to settle your account by cash, check, or charge and pick up your items. If you must leave before check-out opens, please contact Lora Plauché or Kim Traver the following Monday to settle your account.

How do I bid in the Silent Auction?
Silent auction items each have a bid sheet with pre-printed bid amounts. To place your bid, simply write your bid number next to the desired bid amount.

What are guaranteed bids?
Bidders have the option to guarantee a purchase from the silent auction by bidding the guaranteed bid. Guaranteed bids are set above the retail value of each item determined to be fair by the committee. The first bidder to sign the bottom of the bid sheet commits to paying the guaranteed price and becomes the winning bid. Live items are not available for guaranteed bids. Auction patrons have the privilege of placing guaranteed bids 15 minutes before the auction opens. Auction items purchased must remain on display for the remainder of the auction.

What is an auction patron?
Auction patrons support the auction by helping to underwrite the costs of the event. They are vital to the success of the auction. To show our appreciation, all patrons receive access to the silent auction preview on auction night and special recognition for their support.

How can I get involved?
There are several ways you can participate and be a part of the FSW Auction:

Donate an item or service to auction — whether it is a piece of jewelry or a dream vacation in Costa Rica, there is something you can contribute or solicit for the auction.

Ask friends, family members, or businesses to make donations.

Advertise in the auction program. Use the space to thank a special teacher, place a class photo, or list your business. Contact Lora Plauché for pricing.

Become an Auction Patron — underwrite certain expenses related to the evening.

Attend the event and BID, BID, BID! The evening is fun for all, whether you enjoy the social fellowship of Friends School parents and alumni, make a silent bid for a class basket, or raise your paddle for a trip to Merida, Mexico!

Work with the Auction Committee — the committee is comprised of dedicated volunteers who pull together every detail of the event, and would love your support and involvement. Contact Lora Plauché for volunteer opportunities.

How can I make a donation?
Complete a donation form (below), drop it off in the main office, or email it to lplauche@gmail.com. Next, bring in your item or arrange with the auction committee to have it picked up or delivered closer to the auction. Be sure to provide brochures or pictures for the display of your item if available.

What are some good ideas for donations?
Getaways: a week or long weekend at your vacation home; hotel or inn; train or airline tickets; sailing excursions.
Food and Wine: fine wines; specialty gift baskets; restaurant certificates; cookbooks; group dinners, parties, and desserts.
Entertainment: theater; concert or circus tickets; zoo trips.
Children's items: sets of books; scooters; theme baskets; Lego's; electronic toys; computer software, games and lessons.
Sports: golf at your club; any sports tickets; lessons; new sports equipment and memorabilia.
Uniquely FSW: use you and your family's creativity to make or arrange something special for the auction, from quilts to parties, ceramics to lessons. Donations from this category are highly cherished each year.
Other Ideas: Credit card bonus points or merchandise purchased with bonus points; lunches with celebrities or walk-on appearances on TV shows.

Is our donation tax-deductible?
Yes, as the law allows. You will receive a note acknowledging your donation. Please refer to your tax advisor for details.
